A city at the foot of the god
Tirupati, in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, is one of the oldest and most visited pilgrimage cities in the world. The town nestles at the foot of the Tirumala hills — the Seshachalam range — atop which stands the Sri Venkateswara Swamy temple, known everywhere as Tirupati Balaji.
Scripture describes Lord Venkateswara as the Kaliyuga deity who descended to save humanity. Kings of the Pallava, Chola and Vijayanagara dynasties endowed the temple for over a thousand years; today Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), founded in 1933, manages the shrine and its vast network of pilgrim services, schools and hospitals.
An estimated 50,000–70,000 devotees climb the hill every day, making it the busiest sacred site on earth — yet the city itself rewards a slower visit: waterfalls, forts, museums and a dozen ancient temples wait beyond the main queue.

Give online through the official TTD e-donations portal before you travel, or at the hundi counters. Offerings support annadanam, education and hospital services.
Darshan & timings
Suprabhata Seva begins 3:00 AM. Sarva Darshan is free with tokens; Special Entry Darshan (₹300) can be booked online to shorten the wait.
Laddu & prasad
The famous Tirupati Laddu holds a Geographical Indication tag. Every darshan ticket includes one free laddu; extra quotas can be booked online.
The seven hills
Seshadri, Neeladri, Garudadri, Anjanadri, Vrishabhadri, Narayanadri and Venkatadri — the temple crowns the seventh, Venkatachala, at 853 metres.
Alipiri footpath
The traditional 3,550-step climb from Alipiri takes 3–4 hours. Free luggage transport and canopy cover most of the route; start before dawn.
Hair offering
Tonsure (kalyanakatta) is a centuries-old vow fulfilled by millions. Facilities are free and run round the clock near the temple.

Kapila Theertham
Sacred waterfall temple of Lord Shiva at the foothills — the only Shiva shrine on the seven hills of Tirumala.
Sri Govindaraja Temple
The lord of the town, famed for its towering 12th-century gopuram and daily aarti in the heart of Tirupati.
Sri Padmavathi Temple
The consort of Venkateswara at Tiruchanur — pilgrims seek her blessing before ascending to Tirumala.
Chandragiri Fort
11th-century hilltop fort and Raja Mahal palace, once the capital of the Vijayanagara empire.
Getting to Tirupati
Tirupati Airport (TIR)
Daily flights from Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and Delhi. About 15 km from the city centre.
Tirupati Railway Station
A major junction on the Chennai–Vijayawada line with express trains from all over India.
APSRTC & private buses
Chennai is ~135 km away. Frequent buses and cabs; ghat road vehicles run to Tirumala day and night.
Small things, carried
- —Book darshan and accommodation on tirupatibalaji.ap.gov.in well in advance — weekends sell out.
- —Dress code applies inside the temple: dhoti/pancha for men, saree or salwar for women.
- —Mobile phones, cameras and leather items are not allowed inside; use the free cloak rooms.
- —TTD runs free annadanam (meals) for all pilgrims daily on Tirumala.
- —Free buses connect Tirupati bus stand and railway station to Tirumala round the clock.
- —Carry original photo ID — it is verified at the queue entry points.
